More than 10 years ago when JPS Concept began development work on its first Supercapacitor modules, the use of this technology was confidential and reserved for a number of very specific professional applications.
Today, the Capas–Starter modules patented by JPS Concept have proved themselves many times on racing yachts, and are now available to replace or complement the starter batteries and service batteries used in everyday applications.
Capas-Starter modules provide a startup current of several hundred amps while drawing only a very low level of current (barely 10 amps) from the service batteries.
Whether partially or completely discharged, modules can be stored for many months, even at low temperatures.
Around 8 minutes is all that is required to charge a 15V module from ‘completely discharged’ status to ‘ready-to-start’ status (approximately 4 minutes for a 32V module).
Once this first charge has been completed, a 15V module will return to full charge in just 1½ minutes after each starting cycle, and a 32V module in a fraction under 1 minute.
‘Ready-to-start’ status can be relayed to the instrument panel as a LED or standard indicator light. These modules can power more than 500,000 starting cycles (compared with between 300 and 600 cycles for a traditional starter battery!).
Installation is very straightforward using our wiring diagrams, which are available on request, contact us..
Please note that the charging technology used makes it possible to charge a 15V Capas-Starter Module from a 24V (18-32V) onboard power system and to charge a 32V Capas-Starter Module from a 12V (10-18V) onboard power system.
But the potential applications for Supercondensers extend beyond simply engine start.
They provide a perfect solution for supplying peaks in power demand over limited periods (for hydraulic generators, winches, autopilots, compressors, etc.) without compromising onboard system voltage, thereby avoiding power outages and reduced battery life.
